BI Technical Lead

Glasgow / Hybrid working

The Company are looking for a technical leader who can lead the MI-BI team towards successful business outcomes. The Tech Leads are ultimately responsibility for the technical quality of the work done by the squad they lead. They are expected to be technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) of MI-BI data solutions, and act as the bridge between the squads, business areas and customers.

 

 

PRINCIPAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Technical Skills

  • Translate business needs into technical specifications, ability to communicate with both technical & non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven experience of building analytical data models and business intelligence solutions.
  • Defining & documenting reference architectures, solution design patterns, solution accelerators for use in Data Solutions.
  • Solid understanding of data integration, data analysis, data modelling, data visualisation best practises.
  • Focus on development of ETL/data pipelines and data warehouse following industrial best practices.
  • In-depth understanding of database management systems, online analytical processing and ETL (Extract, transform, load) framework.
  • Utilising advanced Microsoft T-SQL knowledge to build and execute ad-hoc data queries upon request.
  • Experience using PowerBI or similar visualisation tool.
  • Participation in Datawarehouse design with a strong understanding of the Kimbal methodology
  • Work closely with the DBA team to ensure any SQL meets stringent performance and governance standards.
  • Good working knowledge of data modelling and schema patterns.
  • Create and maintain a library of technical documentation and help expand the business data dictionary.
  • Experience in delivering and supporting Dynamics 365 functionality
  • Understanding of release management process and devops practices of continuous integration and Continuous development

 

Leadership

  • Leading team in the definition of best practices & repeatable methodologies in Data Engineering (including Data Storage, ETL, Data Warehousing), BI, Data Visualisation, Data Presentation, Data Analytics & Data Science.
  • Contribute to the development of the Data & MI team's direction and strategy
  • Play a key role in in establishing, championing and supporting architectural decisions.
  • Input heavily into the technical roadmap, and how it folds into the product roadmap.
  • Work closely with the Product Owners, stakeholders and other Tech Leads to design high quality technical solutions which meet specified business objectives, whilst adhering to overarching business and technical requirements and constraints.
  • Ensure that any solutions meet regulatory obligations set by the FCA with specific focus on GDPR and other data and non-data related regulations.
  • Maintain operational resilience with robust reporting & controls on performance, contingency, and third-party management.
  • Ensure all business intelligence solution design, development & delivery follow appropriate governance process and policy.
  • Ensuring the branching and merging policy is adhered to.
  • Focus the squad on creating interesting technical solutions to business problems, to bring a positive energy to the work done.
  • Work with ART Managers to support release planning
  • Work with the Application Operations team to support the build and release process
  • Act as a strong voice in the definition of squad and clan OKRs.

 

Participating in Team Development

  • Support activities to define training needs within the squad and wider team.
  • Actively focus on succession planning, by identifying and supporting the development of future Tech Leads.
  • Mentor members of the squad and contribute to the definition of personal OKRs.

Academic / Vocational Qualifications

  • Experience in a Lead MI-BI development role
  • Degree level qualification

Specific Knowledge

  • 3 years’ experience in Data factory
  • Experience of Azure ETL
  • Azure SQL Database
  • Advanced T-SQL
  • Azure Synapse
  • Datawarehousing in Azure

 

  • Knowledge of PowerBI or similar
  • Databricks and Datalakes
  • Knowledge of Agile tools/frameworks (Scrum in particular)
