Software Engineering Manager

Permanent & Full-time

Glasgow City (Open to remote/flexible options)

£60,000 – 85,000

Opportunity

This engineering manager vacancy is a very exciting opportunity for any managerial or architect level candidates who would love to help a young start-up achieve their ambitious scale-up targets. This is a rare opportunity to join a team early in its story and be an integral part of its success & growth. If you are a current or former software engineer with superb leadership & managerial skills and you loves building teams from their infancy, this one is for you!

The Company

One of Scotland’s coolest young start-ups. This company is in the initial stages of creating a very unique product that could be game-changing in their sector. There is currently a small development team and they are looking to scale up & build 3 separate platform teams.

The 3 platforms will be heavily data driven and interact with each other. One platform, currently built, will gather relevant data which will be used as the baseline to feed into the other 2 platforms. More information on the data involved & purpose of these platforms will be provided upon application.

Being owned by a larger software company yet functioning as a fully independent start-up gives all the usual benefits of a start; a fast paced-environment whilst on the cutting edge of technology and ways of working; with the added security & investment of a larger business.

The Technology

This company does not need candidates to know & match a lot of buzzwords. They would be open to candidates of many different technical backgrounds as long as they come from a software engineering background & are still highly technical.

  • Some products are built in Java (Spring), JavaScript (React/ Angular) & CSS
  • Others are built using NodeJS, React, GraphQL
  • All hosted on AWS

Someone with experience in these technologies would be the natural fit but polyglot or agnostic candidates would be considered.

The Responsibilities

  • Driving product development through your strategic technical direction, in collaboration with Product Managers or key stakeholders
  • Line management responsibilities (mentoring, 1-1s, performance reviews etc.)
  • Providing technical support and guidance to your team when it is required
  • Upholding best practice & modern processes in development & putting company culture at the forefront of everything you do
  • Nurture young talent through mentoring, coaching & code reviews

The Candidate

  • Extensive experience across software development, ideally a former/current engineer
  • History of leading or managing a team
  • Previous responsibility over a product’s direction including strategic or architectural decision-making
  • Someone highly committed, highly motivated, & energetic
  • Fantastic communication skills
  • Natural curiosity
  • Independent thinker who is open to new ideas & ways of working
