Spotlight on Derek Gibb - 7 years at Net Talent

Posted 6/1/2020 by Helen Clellend

2020 marks a huge year for Net Talent as we celebrate 10 years of business and continued success. For 7 of those years, our Sales Director Derek has played a pivotal role in shaping the business into what is it today. As a shareholder of Net Talent, and alongside our CEO Yvonne, Derek leads from the front and does so with determination and good humour! We can’t wait to see what the next 7 years brings.

To mark the start of our 10th year, we’re getting to know a little more about Derek.

Derek, congratulations on 7 successful years at Net Talent! Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I’ve spent my entire career in IT Recruitment, it’s not often I get the chance to sit and reflect on how I got to where I am, but it’s been an amazing journey!

I started my role with one of the largest recruitment companies in Europe, just before I graduated from The University Strathclyde (Marketing and Economics), and just before the financial crisis/ recession in 2008 – a challenging time to be starting in recruitment and I think it’s something that’s really always helped me to be extra determined and resilient ever since. Some of my very best client relationships began then too.

Part of being good at recruitment is to always have an ear to the ground for companies that are doing interesting things; that’s exactly what happened to me when I decided to make a move to a smaller recruitment company that were doing some very cool things and could offer a different challenge. I had good times, challenges and even met my wife there – so it was definitely a good move!

My role at Net Talent was a whole new challenge and something that really got me excited. Yvonne had taken the business through the real start-up stage and wanted someone that could help support the company through growth in all aspects – changing the way that the company worked, helping to expand our client portfolio and the service level that we could provide. I was hooked, and 7 years later I’m still loving continually striving for improvement and growth.

What does your role entail?

Now you’re asking! This really does change every day. My passion will always be working with innovative companies to help them achieve great things. I’m in the fortunate position to work with companies and people that are passionate and exciting and doing great things – and that always keeps me motivated.

Beyond that, one of the key aspects of my role is to work with our team to ensure that we provide value to our clients by providing bespoke solutions tailored to their individual needs, as well as planning and targeting specific areas of technology and companies within it that we would like to work with, preparing bids and tenders and working on the commercial side of the business.

What’s your favourite thing about Net Talent?

That’s easy – our people, and the freedom that we give them to work in their own unique, individual styles. There’s no identikit “Net Talent Person” and we are proud to have strong characters in the business that really use their personalities to build long and meaningful relationships with our clients.

What has been your proudest achievement to date?

Becoming a father and still managing to make it to my desk even after just a couple of hours sleep!

Thanks Derek!
